Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Hi friend,

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, but trafficking is not just a national issue. It is happening every day in our own community.

For the last 15 years, January has been set aside to raise awareness about human trafficking and to educate the public on how to identify and prevent this crime. While the exploitation of people for sex and labor has existed throughout human history, it has only been in recent decades that governments, organizations, and individuals have begun to more clearly recognize human trafficking for what it is: a serious crime with devastating consequences for victims, families, and communities.

Human trafficking is the exploitation of men, women, and children for forced labor or sex for another person’s profit or gain. Put even more simply, trafficking is the exploitation of vulnerabilities. Every day, vulnerable people in our community are being exploited and abused. Survivors endure profound physical, emotional, and psychological harm. These realities raise difficult but necessary questions:

  • What can be done to prevent exploitation before it begins?

  • How can victims be identified and supported?

  • How do we ensure perpetrators are held accountable while survivors are restored with dignity and care?

These complex questions deserve thoughtful, compassionate, and effective solutions. At Red Oak Hope, we are committed to playing our part in prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership. We believe trafficking can be prevented. Victims can be identified and supported in exiting exploitation. And lifelong healing and hope are possible when people, systems, and communities are informed, equipped, and engaged.

This month, we want to highlight tools, resources, and education that empower every person in our community to help build a world where people can be safe, seen, and supported. Let us know if you have any questions about human trafficking or our work!
